This village kiosk—part of a unexpected “jobs ecosystem”—was set-up by two women who launched a small business of handmade crafts and other goods to the new groups of workers in impoverished regions of southern Tunisia. The ecosystem was the result of a US$5 million pilot program, launched by the Tunisian government and supported by the World Bank. Designed to tackle unemployment, the program provided temporary on-the-job paid apprenticeships in remote communities on the border with Libya most affected by the drop in border trade with the neighboring country. The 2012–15 program wanted to find out whether the way people responded to a jobs crisis in their home areas might offer solutions to unemployment that could be scaled-up and used elsewhere.
