Lighting Homes, Empowering lives: 20-years of electrification in Lao PDR

In this video, beneficiaries talk about the results of two decades of continuous World Bank assistance to the electrification of Lao PDR. In 1995, just 16% of the population were connected to the power grid. Today that figure stands at an impressive 70%. The Lao PDR electrification program's approach has been an all encompassing one--from building capacities at the government level (including the electricity authority) to developing a bottom up rural electrification planning (on grid and off grid), a gender sensitive eligibility criteria, and project procurement, management and implementation aspects. Still, more resources are needed to reach the Government's target of 90% access to the grid by 2020.
