October 13, 2016

WASHINGTON, October 13, 2016 — World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim issued the following statement today on the passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of the Kingdom of Thailand:

"On behalf of the staff of the World Bank Group, I extend my most heart-felt sympathies to the people of the Kingdom of Thailand on the passing of their beloved Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

During His Majesty’s reign of steady and enlightened leadership over seven decades through his philosophy of Sufficiency Economy, he has championed the wellbeing of all Thai people, helped the poor share in the country's rising prosperity, and pioneered efforts in sustainable development for generations to come.

His Majesty will be remembered and honored for his commitment and great contributions to rural and economic development, which helped lift millions in the poorest regions out of poverty, and as a unifying and benevolent figure that brought together the nation.

At this time of most profound grief, the Thai people are in our thoughts and prayers."
