World Bank Vice President for Africa to Visit Seychelles to Reinforce Ties

May 23, 2014

SEYCHELLES, May 23, 2014 – The World Bank’s Vice President for the Africa Region, Mr. Makhtar Diop will visit Seychelles from May 24-27.

Mr. Diop’s visit will build on recent development talks between the Government of Seychelles and the World Bank Regional Vice-President held in Washington DC in April, and further deepen the strong relationship between the two partners.

“I’m delighted to make this trip to Seychelles, and I look forward to meeting the President and other members of the Government, Parliamentarians, and the people of Seychelles,” said Makhtar Diop, World Bank Regional Vice President for Africa. “I’ll be talking with the government and local communities about how we in the World Bank can further strengthen our support to the Seychelles to achieve its medium to long term development priorities, especially those that relate to lasting economic growth, jobs, and adapting to climate change as a small island nation.”

During his visit, Vice-President Diop will be received by His Excellency Mr. James Alix Michel, the President of the Republic of Seychelles for a courtesy call at the State House. He will then meet His Excellency Mr. Danny Faure, the Vice-President of the Republic of Seychelles, and will hold meetings with Hon. Pierre Laporte, Minister of Finance, Trade and Investment, and with members of the parliament.

Mr. Diop will visit development projects in infrastructure and small business, and will discuss their results with beneficiaries and the private sector.

The World Bank Group’s support to Seychelles is based in its Country Partnership Strategy (2012-15), which is fully aligned with the country’s development ambitions to reduce poverty and vulnerability, boost prosperity for the people of The Seychelles, while providing the ingredients for long term sustainable growth and development.
