Agata Pawlowska

Lead Operations Officer for Central Asia, Country Manager for Turkmenistan, Europe and Central Asia

Agata E. Pawlowska joined the World Bank Central Asia Regional Office as a Lead Operations Officer on June 15, 2013. In October 2013, she also started acting as the Country Manager for Turkmenistan. She is based in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Agata brings a wealth of experience from the Bank as well as from the private sector. Prior to this position Agata has worked as a Senior Operations Officer and was based in the Ethiopia Country Office in Addis Ababa. In this capacity she was managing a large and diverse portfolio the International Development Association (IDA) in terms of size (over $5 billion in commitments – the largest in the Africa region), sectoral (25 projects across all sectors) and geographical coverage (highly decentralized). She has led the preparation of the Ethiopia Country Partnership Strategy Fiscal Years 2013-2016 as well as other analytical and technical work, including Country Assistance Strategy Completion Report, Country Portfolio Performance Review, Extended Governance and Anti-Corruption Review of Ethiopia Portfolio, and introduction of Results Integration and Management System Dashboard (RIMsys) to track Country Partnership Strategy implementation. She established a Core Portfolio Team in the Country Office and introduced a mechanism for regular dialogue with the Government of Ethiopia on key challenges facing IDA portfolio.

Agata has joined the Bank in 1998 as a Young Professional and spent her first 8 years working as a Senior Economist in Europe and Central Asia Poverty Reduction and Economic Management (PREM) and then in the Africa Private and Financial Sector Development Unit (FPD), where she gained first-hand experience managing several Bank operations and analytical work. From 2007 to 2011 she worked as a Senior Operations Officer in the Finance Resource Management Department - in a team that has managed IDA15 and IDA16 replenishment and IDA15 Mid-Term Review. Before joining the Bank, Agata worked as a business consultant in an international consultancy firm based in London, UK as well as a lecturer at the University of Lodz in Poland.

Agata holds a PhD degree in Economics from the University of Birmingham, England and an MSc degree in Economics from the University of Birmingham, England and the University of Lodz, Poland. She speaks Polish, English and Russian. Agata has relocated to Almaty with her husband Tom and their two children – Gregory and Kasia. In her free time she enjoys travelling and after touring Africa for the past few years she intends to focus on Asia.
