World Bank Statement Expressing Condolences to the Victims of West Sumatra Earthquake

JAKARTA, OCTOBER 5, 2009—World Bank President Robert B. Zoellick wrote today to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono expressing his deepest sympathies for the people of Indonesia and sincere condolences to the victims and families of the West Sumatra earthquake.

He also assured the World Bank’s continued support to the Indonesian government’s efforts to help people recover and rebuild their homes and lives, and that the World Bank is now in active discussions with the government on how best to support these efforts.

"It is with great sadness that we are learning about the loss of life and devastation caused by the West Sumatra earthquake,” said Mr. Zoellick in his letter to President Yudhoyono.
