The first Annual Gemloc Advisory Services Workshop and Investor-Country Conference was held during March 25-27 in Cairo, Egypt to discuss key challenges and opportunities for developing local bond markets.

The first Annual Gemloc Advisory Services Workshop and Investor-Country Conference was held during March 25-27 in Cairo, Egypt. The three-day event, hosted jointly with the Ministry of Investment, Egypt, attracted representatives from Ministries of Finance, Central Banks and securities regulators from over 16 emerging market countries and several global investors to discuss key challenges and opportunities for developing local bond markets.

The Workshop addressed key technical issues in local bond market development, targeted at Gemloc country officials. The Conference provided a unique opportunity for global investors and senior country officials to meet and exchange information about local bond markets in selected emerging market countries and learn how the Gemloc program might help strengthen those markets. It also included individual country-investor meetings for in-depth discussions on topics of mutual interest.

This session described the role of repo markets in developing local bond markets, reviewing both investors' business rationale for using repos for different markets and policy actions to promote and remove obstacles to the use of repos. Different repo market structures were also discussed. Country panelists then highlighted the use of repo markets and their impact on market development in their respective countries.
