Profile of Mali Banque Culturelle

Website Name Mali Banque Culturelle
Website Description This web site contains information about the Mali Cultural Bank, which provides support to village development institutions which are controlled by members of the community. The Cultural Bank project’s aim is to allow rural populations to install their artwork in village museums in exchange for loans to individuals or groups of individuals. Each Cultural Bank is run by a group of elected local managers and each bank is expected to be completely independent both financially and administratively, within three years of its creation. This initiative provides the rural poor with access to credit, management training, and advanced crafts; therefore, they can better manage their income generating activities, their property, and their community services. This project has led to a significant increase in the purchasing power of households, a reduction in the illicit trafficking of arts and antiquities, and a renewed cooperation in social, cultural, and economic development in and between villages.
