Grant amount: US$96,052 (US$200,000 originally allocated)
Implementation period: April 1, 2024 – February 28, 2025
Disbursement: US$96,052 (as of June 30, 2025)
Bank lending operation: Sustainable Municipal Development Project (P502834)
The grant assisted the Government of North Macedonia in integrating climate-smart and resilience features into a project appraisal system to be piloted under the Sustainable Municipal Development Project (SUMDEP).
Component 1 supported counterparts in the development of a climate-smart and resilient municipal service investment project (“sub-project”) appraisal system. Component 2 included capacity-building measures targeting the North Macedonian Ministry of Finance and targeted municipalities. Together, the activities were meant to enable the counterpart to better identify, prioritize, appraise, and implement climate-smart and resilient municipal service investment sub-projects to be financed by SUMDEP and others.
The North Macedonian country grant was closed at the end of February 2025, with part of the deliverables fully completed but others not further pursued, given that the newly elected government decided not to request a new urban lending operation in December 2024. This resulted in the disengagement of urban development activities and the pause of grant activities without any near-term prospect of resumption.
