Grant objective
The grant objective is to provide TA support to the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic in its climate change adaptation and mitigation efforts across the five largest cities in the south of the Kyrgyz Republic.
- Component 1 strengthens the climate resilience and sustainability of infrastructure in the cities of Osh and Uzgen (to be covered under the First Regional Economic Development Project), and Batken, Razzakov, and Kadamjay (to be covered under the Second Regional Economic Development Project) by integrating climate-responsivemeasuresintothedesignandimplementation of Bank-financed Investment Project Financing (IPF) operations.
- Component 2 undertakes a comprehensive climate and liveability assessment for all seven regional capitals of Kyrgyzstan and shall identify key bottlenecks to sustainable urban development. Respective outputs will include city-level diagnostics, and a set of evidence-based recommendations tailored to each city’s context. The findings of this assessment will inform and guide future Bank-supported interventions.
Implementation progress
Grant implementation is off to a positive start. The grant will provide TA support to the Kyrgyz Government in their climate change adaptation and mitigation efforts across the five largest cities in the south of the Kyrgyz Republic through integrating climate-responsive measures into the design and implementation of Bank-financed infrastructure investments. Climate and livability assessments for all regional capitals of Kyrgyzstan will be developed. The grant is linked to both the First Regional Economic Development Project and the Second Regional Economic Development Project (both under implementation).
Next Steps
A comprehensive diagnostic of climate resilience and urban livability across the seven regional capitals will be conducted. An Urban Planning Academy will offer a tailored program for municipal staff designed to strengthen capacity in climate-resilient and sustainable urban management.
