The Social Contract Global Dataset provides indicators to characterize countries' social contracts across all regions over the past 20 years. Developed using the World Bank's conceptual framework from the 2021 report, Social Contracts for Development, the dataset includes three leading indices: Civil Capacity, Quality of the Citizen-State Interface, and Resilience. Each index comprises sub-indices that reflect key aspects of citizen-state relations, such as civic engagement, government accountability, and public trust.
The dataset draws on publicly available sources, including Varieties of Democracy (V-DEM), Bertelsmann Stiftung's Transformation Index (BTI), and the Gallup World Poll (GWP). These sources provide broad coverage across countries and years, enabling analysis of trends in social inclusion, institutional openness, and resilience to social unrest.
Users can access the dataset to examine how social contracts have evolved, compare country-level indicators, and inform research or policy discussions related to development and governance.
