The World Bank Accountability Mechanism

The World Bank Accountability Mechanism (AM) is an independent accountability mechanism for people and communities who believe that they have been, or are likely to be, adversely affected by a World Bank-funded project. It aims to ensure that people have access to an independent body to which they can express their concerns and seek recourse.

The Board of Executive Directors created the AM in September 2020, and it houses the Inspection Panel and the Dispute Resolution Service.

The Panel was established in 1993 as the World Bank’s original independent accountability mechanism and responds to complaints from project-affected people alleging harm because the Bank has not complied with its environmental and social policies and procedures.

The DRS was established in 2020 and facilitates a voluntary, independent and time-bound dispute resolution option for complainants and the borrowers in the context of complaints to the Panel.

The AM is headed by the Accountability Mechanism Secretary who reports to the Board and operates independently of World Bank management.
