The PID MDTF co-finances infrastructure projects and programs for water resilience and security, energy security and sustainability, and climate responsive urban & land development. It also supports the Bank-executed Advisory Services and Analytics (ASA) activities, which underpin and strengthen the ongoing sector policy dialogue in these sectors.

Water Security Development Program (WSDP): Gaza Central Desalination Program –  Associated Works Phase I (AWP-1)

The project aims to improve the quality and quantity of bulk water supplied to the municipalities served in the project area and to strengthen the capacity of the Palestinian Water Authority.

AWP-1 is part of a larger international effort to build a desalination plant and distribute its water across Gaza. AWP-1 aims to:

  • Build infrastructure to blend the water from the desalination plant with other water sources, and distribute it to consumers
  • Procure water from Israel
  • Build the capacity of water institutions

AWP-1 has already supplied drinking water to 280,000 people; the end target is 870,000 people.

The project seeks to support the continuation of wastewater treatment services in North Gaza and strengthen the capacity of the water institutions to manage wastewater services efficiently.

The WMS project provides wastewater services for 368,000 people in North Gaza by:

  • Funding the continued operation of the North Gaza Wastewater Management Facilities (NGWMF) for four years
  • Helping the NGWMF become sustainable in the long term.

Water Security and Resilience Program (WSRP – I)

The project’s goal is to improve the reliability and quality of water supply services in selected areas and to strengthen the operational performance of sector institutions in the Palestinian territories

  • 127,951 properties have been registered; the end target is 161,807 properties

Resilient Municipal Services Project (RMSP)

The project aims to strengthen municipal capacity to deliver accountable, sustainable, inclusive and resilient services to the municipal population in the West Bank and Gaza.

  • ASPIRE MPA builds on ESPIP by further supporting the energy sector reforms led by PENRA
  • Phase I focuses on improving regional electricity interconnections, supporting distribution companies, and promoting private sector engagement in renewable energy
  • Phase II builds on Phase I activities and will also focus on a) supplying smart meters and b) building back better for the conflict-affected medium voltage network in Gaza
  • Further reforms will be supported by phases III and IV
