Transmission unbundling refers to the separation of electricity transmission from other segments of the power sector. The process can take various forms, from accounting separation within a vertically integrated utility to full ownership unbundling, where transmission and competitive market activities are completely independent.

Different unbundling models—Functional, Legal/Independent Transmission Operator (ITO), Independent System Operator (ISO), and Ownership Unbundling—vary in their level of separation and regulatory oversight. Use the year, economy, and region filters to explore the global evolution of transmission unbundling. Hover over an economy to view details about its unbundling experience.
