The 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9) will be held in Yokohama from August 20 to 22, 2025. TICAD 9 will feature vibrant discussions on a wide range of development themes in Africa. As a co-organizer, the World Bank is actively involved in shaping and implementing the core themes of the conference.
This event will feature a case study as well as panel discussion on how partnerships with Japanese companies, and efforts to mitigate country risk can contribute to promoting investment in Africa.

The Global Infrastructure Facility and the Quality Infrastructure Investment Partnership, both housed within the Global Infrastructure Finance Department at the World Bank, will co-host a session on mobilizing private capital for advancing quality infrastructure investment. The discussion will highlight the importance of project preparation and risk mitigation to attract investment. It will also explore ways to enhance collaboration among public and private stakeholders to support sustainable and resilient infrastructure in emerging and developing economies. The session includes an interactive panel discussion, with representatives from AfDB, JICA and MUFG Bank, sharing insights into how best to advance the private investment.

The event will showcase the achievements of the efforts led by countries across Africa in promoting disaster risk reduction and resilient infrastructure over the past decade, with support from the World Bank and GFDRR’s Japan-World Bank Program for Developing Countries in Disaster Risk Reduction (managed by the Tokyo DRM Hub) supported by Japan’s Ministry of Finance. The panel will discuss the successes and challenges, and how to further strengthen disaster and climate resilience in this changing world.

TICAD Seminar Series
Since October 2015, the World Bank has hosted the TICAD Seminar Series to share insights with Japanese audiences on challenges and opportunities across Africa, including in business, education, climate change, and more. These seminars have promoted active dialogue among participants.

High-Level Consultations with JICA
Since 2014, the World Bank and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have held annual high-level meetings, with the participation of senior officials including the Vice President for Africa. These consultations aim to identify and monitor progress on joint initiatives in Africa.
Agricultural Projects
Through the Japan Policy and Human Resources Development Fund (PHRD), the Government of Japan has supported rice sector development under the West Africa Agricultural Productivity Programme (WAAPP) in countries such as Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.

Held in Tunis, Tunisia from August 27–28, 2022.

Held in Yokohama, Japan from August 28–30, 2019. Dynamic discussions on a wide range of development issues across Africa were held.
TICAD 6
The first TICAD conference held in Africa. Took place in Nairobi, Kenya from August 27–28, 2016. The World Bank focused on topics such as Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and private sector development. In the field of international health, the conference highlighted efforts under “UHC for Africa” to strengthen health systems and promote universal coverage in African countries.
TICAD 5
Held in Yokohama, Japan in June 2013. The World Bank hosted a session titled “Building Climate and Disaster Resilience for African Development,” advocating for the mainstreaming of disaster risk management in African development. Then-World Bank President Jim Yong Kim emphasized continued support for Africa through the International Development Association (IDA) during his opening speech.
