Organized by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)
Co-organized by World Bank, World Health Organization and UHC2030
- Overview
Background
- Since TICAD V in 2013, JICA has been promoting UHC in Africa by holding side events on UHC with the World Bank, WHO and other related organizations. At TICAD VI, "UHC in Africa: A Framework for Action” was presented.
- Based on the 2030 SDGs achievement deadline and “Agenda 2063” developed by African Union, this is an appropriate time to discuss the ideal state of UHC in Africa over the medium- to long-term with a view to 2030 and beyond.
- Therefore, the specific content of the session will include three perspectives: sharing of the progress towards UHC after COVID-19 pandemic, discussing the impact of changes in demographics and disease burden for achieving UHC with a gender perspective in mind, and highlighting innovative approaches to promote UHC in Africa.
Key Questions
- How has development assistance in health been changing in Africa?
- How will demographics shift in Africa by 2063, and what are the implications for the disease burden? How will gender affect?
- What is the progress towards UHC in Africa? What are the accelerators or bottlenecks for the progress?
- How will changes in demographics and disease burden impact achieving UHC in Africa? What is the potential impact on health systems (e.g., health financing)?
- What innovation is the country implementing? What challenges does the innovation address and what are the enablers of the innovative approach?
- How are you working on change management to implement the innovation?
- What is required to address increasing and diversifying healthcare needs of a rapidly growing population with longer life expectancy?
Objective
- To provide the insights on achieving UHC in Africa by highlighting the shifts in demographics and disease burden in Africa and their implications for UHC and by showcasing innovative approaches in different country contexts to promote UHC.
