SSI4ALL: Advancing Social Sustainability in the 21st Century

People are at the heart of development — a transformative journey that empowers society to drive inclusive change, creating benefits for all. Ensuring that development processes are fair, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of all citizens is essential for reducing poverty and fostering economic prosperity. Social sustainability, at its core, means that everyone is part of the development process and that each generation benefits from its outcomes.

Yet today, we face overlapping global crises: climate change, rising conflict and fragility and pandemic risks have exacerbated social exclusion and inequality, challenging sustainable development efforts. Approximately 2.3 billion people — around a third of the world’s population — are at risk of exclusion due to factors like economic status, gender, race, religion, nationality, age, disability, and more.

What is SSI4ALL?

SSI4ALL is dedicated to developing inclusive, resilient, and empowered societies. It serves as an integrated platform that combines knowledge sharing, data, analytics, country engagement, and financing to advance social sustainability. By bringing together the World Bank Group, civil society, development partners, the private sector, and academia, SSI4ALL scales up proven solutions and deepens our understanding of what works in social sustainability.

Why SSI4ALL at the World Bank?

  • Leveraging the Global Department for Social Development: With a network of over 320 social scientists and a direct role in a $4.5 billion portfolio, SSI4ALL benefits from the World Bank’s extensive experience and investment capacity across a $400 billion global portfolio.

  • Policy and Institutional Reforms: Supporting reforms that protect vulnerable populations and advance social inclusion.
  • Data and Diagnostic Investments: Developing new tools to analyze and address social exclusion, fragility, and lack of voice to drive poverty reduction.
  • Knowledge Platform: Creating a repository of experiences and insights for policymakers and practitioners to learn from and replicate effective strategies.

SSI4ALL Theory of Change

Social sustainability truly succeeds when the following pillars work in tandem:

  • Inclusive Societies focus on closing service and market gaps for marginalized groups, ensuring equitable access to opportunities. However, without community empowerment and accountability mechanisms, these gains may lack sustainability and impact.
  • Resilient Communities address vulnerabilities by preparing for exogenous shocks like climate events, pandemics, or economic crises. Without resilience, progress can be swiftly undone by unexpected disruptions.
  • Empowered People ensure that communities have a voice and can contribute their knowledge and innovative solutions to development processes. Empowered communities are integral to shaping sustainable and high-quality services, holding institutions accountable, and sustaining long-term development impacts.

Together, these pillars form a comprehensive approach to social sustainability, enabling communities to shape, influence, and sustain their development journey.
