This course is grounded in the Energy Sector management Assistance Program (ESMAP)’s From Sun to Roof to Grid report series and provides an in-depth exploration of distributed photovoltaic (DPV) systems and their role in modern power systems. It examines a wide range of DPV use cases, deployment approaches, and international case studies to illustrate how this technology can support energy access, enhance grid resilience, and contribute to clean energy transitions. Participants will gain insight into the benefits of DPV as well as the regulatory, technical, and commercial challenges that can arise as deployment scales up. The course addresses key policy and planning questions, including how DPV can be incorporated into national energy strategies and what incentive mechanisms are most effective in supporting market development. It also explores the role of regulators in maintaining grid stability, designing fair and transparent compensation schemes, and ensuring equitable participation by consumers and utilities. In addition, the course examines utility business models and how they can adapt to increasing customer-led DPV adoption, as well as practical issues such as streamlining interconnection procedures and improving access to financing for developers and consumers. Technical and safety considerations are also covered, with a focus on standards and best practices for DPV system design, installation, and operation. Overall, the course is designed to equip policymakers, regulators, utilities, developers, and other stakeholders with the knowledge needed to enable the successful and sustainable integration of distributed photovoltaic systems into the power grid.
