Inadequate solid waste management (SWM) directly affects public health and the environment. Poorly managed waste impacts cities' livability, competitiveness and can exacerbate social inequality. Improvements in SWM practices have positive impacts on cities' environmental and social sustainability, in addition to overall economic competitiveness. Additionally, these improvements may create jobs and open opportunities for private sector participation and have positive and substantial impacts on overall economic competitiveness.
