Introduction to the World Bank Environmental and Social Framework

image

On August 4, 2016, the World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors approved the Environmental and Social Framework (ESF) to help protect people and the environment in the investment projects it finances. The Environmental and Social Framework is made up of the World Bank’s vision for sustainable development, the World Bank’s Environmental and Social Policy for Investment Project Financing, and ten Environmental and Social Standards. These set out the mandatory requirements for the World Bank and for Borrowers to address environmental and social risks and impacts in investment projects. Examples of these requirements include conducting environmental and social impact assessments, consulting with affected communities about potential project impacts, and restoring the livelihoods of displaced people. This self-paced eLearning course will introduce participants to the content of the Environmental and Social Framework. It is strongly recommended that participants carefully read the ESF together with the course in order to deepen their understanding of the ESF. The ESF and other resource materials are available on: worldbank.org/esf.
