El comportamiento humano es un factor clave de la salud. Consideremos los principales factores de riesgo de las principales causas de muerte y discapacidad: madres y niños con bajo peso, relaciones sexuales sin protección, hipertensión arterial, tabaquismo, abuso del alcohol, agua no potable, saneamiento e higiene deficientes, colesterol alto, humo de combustibles sólidos en interiores, deficiencia de hierro y sobrepeso. En los países pobres, dos factores de riesgo -la insuficiencia ponderal en la infancia y las relaciones sexuales de riesgo- contribuyen más a la pérdida de años de vida saludable en el mundo, que todas las enfermedades y lesiones en los países de ingresos altos, y pueden abordarse mediante intervenciones eficaces de cambio de comportamiento. Nuestros enfoques habituales han tenido un éxito limitado a la hora de persuadir a las personas para que adopten comportamientos más saludables. La información por sí sola no suele conducir a un cambio de comportamiento. Los nuevos y crecientes datos apuntan a una forma diferente de abordar el cambio de comportamiento, y no sólo en el sector sanitario. El reto consiste en adaptar estos nuevos conocimientos y utilizarlos en el diseño de las reformas para la Cobertura Sanitaria Universal (UHC por sus siglas en inglés).
