00:37 and request him to cooperate.
00:41 But what if you have multiple sources of pollution around you?
00:45 Some neighbors may burn garbage,
00:47 others may sweep their yards.
00:50 Or construct new homes.
00:52 There could be traffic jams around your neighborhood,
00:55 a power plant
00:56 just outside your city.
00:59 And crop stubble being burnt in a nearby district.
01:03 The combined effect of all these pollutants impacts every resident in that area,

01:15 The common geographic area where pollutants get trapped
01:19 and create similar air quality for everyone,
01:22 is called your air shed.
01:24 The size of your air shed can be large.
01:27 It could include nearby cities,
01:29 states,
01:30 even countries.
01:32 So,
01:33 to tackle the issue of air pollution,
01:35 the first step is to understand
01:37 what airshed you are in.
01:41 And step 2 is to find out
01:43 the major sources of air pollution around you.
01:49 India has multiple air sheds.
01:51 Among them,
01:52 the densely populated Indo-Gangetic Plain is one of
01:56 the world's largest and most polluted air sheds.
02:01 One of the most dangerous pollutants across India is PM 2.5.
02:07 As the name suggests,
02:09 this is extremely fine particulate matter,
02:12 just 2.5 micrometers in diameter,
02:15 or even smaller.
02:17 These particles are so light,
02:19 the wind can carry them high
02:21 and to far off places.
02:26 And they are really tiny,
02:28 just 1/30 the width of human hair.
02:33 This means they can easily enter the lungs.
02:37 And bloodstream
02:39 And then wreak havoc,
02:41 severely damaging vital organs,
02:43 causing serious diseases,
02:45 and posing a huge threat to life.
02:49 Most people think PM 2.5 is only an urban problem
02:53 caused by vehicles,
02:54 power plants,
02:54 and construction work in big cities.
02:58 In reality,
02:59 severe health impacts from p.m. 2.5 are felt across most of India's smaller cities,
03:05 as well as villages.
03:08 Even when the air appears cleaner in summer,
03:12 PM 2.5 particles can still be present in high concentrations.
03:18 A significant portion of PM 2.5 pollution comes
03:22 from secondary sources generated by
03:24 chemical reactions between different gasses.
03:27 For example,
03:28 certain gasses emitted by vehicles and power plants mix
03:32 and rise high above into the atmosphere,
03:34 spreading over cities and nearby rural areas.
03:38 In villages,
03:39 sources like urea fertilizer and animal waste
03:43 release ammonia into the atmosphere.
03:45 All these gasses react together to produce
03:49 new,
03:49 fine particles called
03:51 secondary PM 2.5.
03:54 These particles travel with the wind over long distances
03:58 and affect both rural and urban areas.
04:02 This exchange of pollution creates air sheds with
04:05 similar air quality across a large region.
04:10 So
04:12 To effectively tackle air pollution,
04:14 we need strategies to address it at the air shed level,
04:17 and based on those strategies,
04:19 we need focused interventions at the local level.
04:22 This requires a collective effort across the entire air shed.
04:27 Villages,
04:28 cities,
04:29 states,
04:30 involving governments,
04:32 civil society,
04:33 and the private sector.
04:34 Because
04:35 air pollution
04:36 doesn't limit itself to boundaries of any kind.
