Sweden is a longstanding shareholder and partner of the World Bank Group. It is represented at the Board by an Executive Director shared with the other Nordic and Baltic countries.

Sweden became a member of the World Bank in 1951 and has since worked with the World Bank and other member governments to finance projects, design policies, and deliver programs aimed at ending poverty and promoting sustainable development. Today, it is a member of all five institutions of the World Bank Group.

The World Bank’s Nordic Baltic Desk, based in the Paris Office, promotes collaboration between Sweden and the World Bank Group. It supports outreach activities in partnership with Swedish stakeholders, including conferences, seminars, and other events on development-related topics. The desk also serves as an entry point for Swedish groups seeking to engage with World Bank staff or access the Bank’s published resources, and it responds to media queries.

Sweden’s engagement with the World Bank Group includes co-financing, trust funds, and joint analytical work in sectors and regions of mutual interest. Its development contributions reflect a strong commitment to global cooperation, inclusive growth, and a livable planet.
