What is the WBG Explorers Program?
The World Bank Group Explorers is a two-year program that provides young talents from donors/developed countries with practical experience working on World Bank Group projects in Country Offices.
What is the objective of the program?
The program’s goal is to connect high-potential talent to the World Bank Group’s mission through an immersive experience, building global exposure and enabling participants to actively contribute to development work. WBG Explorers will be working on the WBG projects, enhancing global experience, to ensure that they serve as influential advocates and amplifiers of the WBG’s operations and impact in different countries.
Who is eligible to apply?
Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree and show a strong interest in development work. Successful candidates are expected to be self-driven, innovative, intellectually curious, and possess strong analytical, writing, and interpersonal skills. They must demonstrate a positive attitude, the ability to multitask under pressure, readiness for international mobility, and proficiency in English.
What is the duration of the program?
WBG Explorers is a two-year full-time program.
Where will participants be based?
Participants will be based in World Bank Group Country Offices (World Bank, IFC, or MIGA), excluding headquarters and HQ-like locations.
What type of appointment will participants receive?
Participants will be appointed under an Extended Term Consultant (ETC) contract.
How is the program funded?
The program is fully funded by donors/developed countries using a Trust Fund model (salary and benefits).
What will participants work on?
Participants will support World Bank Group operations. Their assignments will be determined by the Terms of Reference and the business needs of the hosting unit.
Will participants receive supervision or mentorship?
Yes. Participants will be supervised by a Task Team Lead or Manager in their hosting unit.
How are participants assigned to roles or areas of work?
Participants will indicate their areas of interest and will be assigned based on program needs and alignment.
When does the program start?
The program follows an annual cycle, with candidates onboarding around September.
What kind of projects will I work on?
Interns work on real projects aligned with their field of study, under the guidance of a mentor.
Are participants eligible to apply for other WBG positions during the program?
No. Participants are not eligible to apply to open positions in Compass during the program. However, they can apply to the WBG positions towards the end of the program with the start date after completion of the program.

What benefits do Explorers receive?
Salaries and benefits are fully covered by the donor-funded Trust Fund. Appointments follow WBG ETC terms, including health insurance, leave benefits, and other standard entitlements aligned with the ETC framework.
