Sub-Saharan Africa's vast mineral wealth - including 30% of the world's mineral reserves - could generate an additional $20 billion annually in government revenues with improved policies. The World Bank emphasizes that while the region holds significant untapped potential in critical minerals essential for the global energy transition, realizing this potential requires stronger fiscal frameworks, better governance, regional integration through AfCFTA, and strategic policies to avoid the resource curse and build diversified, resilient economies.

As Africa pursues universal electricity access by 2030 through initiatives like Mission 300, this blog cautions that expanding connections alone is insufficient for development impact. The World Bank emphasizes that electrification must focus on reliable supply for productive uses, be integrated with complementary infrastructure, address structural challenges in the energy sector, and allow time for economic transformation to materialize.
