Statement on passing of Former Vanuatu Prime Minister, the Honourable Edward Nipake Natapei

PORT VILA, Vanuatu, July 29, 2015 – The World Bank is saddened by the sudden passing of former Prime Minister, the Honourable Edward Nipake Natapei Tuta Fanua`araki, current Vanuatu Opposition Leader and President of the Vanua'aku Pati, yesterday.

“On behalf of the World Bank, especially those working in the Pacific region, I would like to extend my condolences to the people of Vanuatu,” said Franz Drees-Gross, World Bank Country Director for Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste and the Pacific Islands.

“The World Bank worked closely with Mr. Natapei during his time in Government, most notably in education and increasing Vanuatu’s resilience to climate change and natural hazards.”

Mr. Natapei was an advocate for the people of Vanuatu and will be missed by many. Our thoughts are with Mr. Natapei’s family and friends during this sad time.”
