External Review of the Board Approved Reforms to the Inspection Panel Toolkit and Creation of the World Bank Accountability Mechanism

WASHINGTON, January 30, 2024— Accountability is at the core of the World Bank’s value proposition as premier development financial institution. Accordingly, the World Bank Board of Executive Directors (the Board) strongly supports a robust accountability mechanism and has commissioned an External Review of the 2018 and 2020 Board-approved Reforms to the Inspection Panel Toolkit and Creation of the World Bank Accountability Mechanism, three years after their implementation.

To carry out this External Review, expected to be completed by September 2024, the Board approved an External Review Panel of three independent experts consisting of Arntraud Hartmann, Cindy Petitt and Eduardo Abbott. They were selected for their high international professional stature, expertise, and deep knowledge on independent accountability mechanisms (including on their Compliance and Dispute Resolution functions, structures, good practices, and governance) as well as on change management processes and procedures.
