While Nepal has a large portfolio of social protection programs including public sector pensions; cash transfers; scholarships; health subsidies; and public works which cover about a third of the population; the current programs are neither explicitly aimed at building household and community resilience nor responsive to shocks. This is critical in a country that is highly vulnerable to various natural disasters; and climate risks. The Climate Risk Index ranks Nepal as the 10th most impacted nation globally with over 191 events occurring between 2000 and 2019. Given the increasing frequency and severity of shocks in Nepal; there is a clear and urgent need for investment in ASP programs and systems. While there is wide consensus among key stakeholders on the need to make social protection in Nepal more shock-responsive; much more work is needed to establish the role of SP in building household and community resilience.  In this context; with funds from FCDO; the Nepal Social Protection and Labor team; in collaboration with the Disaster Risk Management team; will work to strengthen the capacity of Government of Nepal to make its social protection systems and programs more adaptive to enhance the resilience of poor and vulnerable populations through technical assistance over the next 5-6 years. This is part of FCDO’s broader Resilience; Adaptation and Inclusion in Nepal (RAIN) program
