Italy
BY THE NUMBERS: ITALY
OVERVIEW: ITALY
Italy is a significant shareholder and partner for the organizations of the World Bank Group. It holds 2.7% of voting power in IBRD, and it is currently represented by Executive Director EDS21 (also representing Albania, Greece, Malta, Portugal, San Marino, and Timor-Leste).
Italy has been a donor to the International Development Association (IDA), the World Bank’s fund for the poorest, since the early years of the institution. As of June 2024, IFC has a long-term commitment portfolio with Italian sponsors of about $1.26 billion, a 117% increase from the previous year.
Italy has hosted a World Bank presence in Rome since 2001. The Rome Office serves the World Bank Group’s External and Corporate Relations functions across Southern Europe, as well as a Knowledge Hub for the Mediterranean and Sub-Saharan Africa in support of the World Bank Group’s strategic vision to become a Knowledge Bank.
Knowledge exchange sits at the heart of the World Bank’s mission because it blends documented evidence with the lived experience and insights of practitioners. By sharing both explicit and tacit knowledge, countries build trust-based partnerships that drive more effective and sustainable development solutions.
