Latvia is a committed shareholder and partner of the World Bank Group. It is represented at the Board by an Executive Director shared with the other Nordic and Baltic countries.

Latvia became a member of the World Bank Group in 1992, shortly after regaining independence, and received its first loan soon thereafter. In just fifteen years, Latvia became a donor to IDA, the World Bank’s fund for the poorest countries. Today, it is a member of all five institutions of the WBGand works with other member governments to finance projects, design policies, and deliver programs to eradicate poverty on a livable planet.

The World Bank’s Nordic Baltic Desk, based in the Paris Office, promotes collaboration between Latvia and the WBG. It supports outreach activities in partnership with Latvian stakeholders, including conferences, seminars, and other events on development-related topics. The desk also serves as an entry point for Latvian groups seeking to engage with World Bank staff or access the Bank’s published resources, and it responds to media queries.

Latvia’s commitment to international development is reflected in its active participation across all five institutions of the WBG.
