A .mdb extension refers to a Microsoft database, or one that is compatible with Microsoft Access. A file geodatabase will create an extension .gdb. A main difference between personal and file geodatabases is size- personal geodatabases are generally more appropriate for single-users or small groups, as they can only contain about 2 GB of data.
