Overview of Institutions for International Waters

April 30, 2014

This activity will prepare an analytical overview of institutions engaged in fostering cooperation in international waters as the first step in a comprehensive effort to support river basin organizations across Africa. The assessment will provide a comparative analysis of the form, functions, scope of authority, and funding mechanisms of international river basins across Africa. The final report under this activity will explore the current state of financial independence, sustainability, and autonomy of these institutions. It is expected that understanding the principles and the mechanisms employed in the creation and formalization of water resources institutions across Africa, through an in-depth appreciation of the derivative principles and mechanisms, will provide a sound basis upon which current and future institutions can be supported as they respond to key national and international policy objectives.
