Technical Deep Dive: Nature-based Solutions for Climate Resilience

Technical Deep Dive on Nature-based Solutions for Climate Resilience

The World Bank Tokyo Development Learning Center (TDLC), co-organized by the GFDRR’s Tokyo DRM Hub, in collaboration with the Global Program on Nature-Based Solutions for Climate Resilience (GPNBS), is organizing an in-person Technical Deep Dive (TDD) on Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) for Climate Resilience from February 20 to 24, 2023.

Cities and communities across the world are experiencing climate impacts of increasing frequency and intensity. Resilience challenges are expected to increase due to climate change and continued loss of protective ecosystems, leading to economic damages, social instability, and eroding the progress made on development. With rapid urbanization and greater density, cities are more exposed to climate risks and will require solutions that builds up resilience. Nature-based solutions are approaches to achieve resilience by using nature and natural processes to deliver infrastructure and services while providing co-benefits for communities, the environment and local economy.

This TDD on NBS for Climate Resilience will explore the design and implementation of nature-based solutions in urban or riverine environments, including aspects of planning, community engagement, capital mobilization, and comprehensive urban resilience measures. The structured learning on NBS will provide a better understanding of how resilience can be designed for cost-effectiveness, sustainability, and restoration of biodiversity.
