Digital education is the integration of digital technologies into teaching and learning processes, ranging from the use of devices and platforms in the classroom to the development of digital skills of students and teachers. It goes beyond simple access to computers or the internet: it involves transforming the way teaching and learning take place, preparing young people to participate in an increasingly digitalized economy.
Its importance is strategic for Latin America and the Caribbean, where the digital divide exacerbates existing educational inequalities. According to PISA 2022 data, only 66% of students in the region attended a school with effective online learning platforms, and barely 3 out of 10 students attended a school whose teachers received incentives to integrate technology into their teaching — a figure that does not even reach half the average of OECD countries.
The World Bank Group supports educational digital transformation in the region with a strategy that combines financing, technical assistance, and innovation.
Since 2024, the World Bank has presented the Digital Innovations for Education series, which documents and disseminates successful cases of digitalization in the region, including the use of artificial intelligence for principals, teachers, and students, as well as tools for personalized learning.
