Family and community violence prevention and response study in Papua New Guinea
Project Summary:
Violence against women and children is endemic throughout Papua New Guinea. It is compounded and reinforced by a lack of access to police and courts; a lack of basic services and support for women experiencing violence; women’s financial dependence on men; family pressures to resolve violence through mediation and compensation; and high rates of impunity for perpetrators. The Trauma Informed Prevention approach unites the community to address collective trauma and stop the cycle of violence. Age- and gender-separated Peer Support Circles create safe spaces to heal and learn.
The Development Marketplace award will enable the research team to evaluate the first phase of this innovative program, support design of the next phases, and inform the development of national guidelines for the management of child abuse cases.
