The Lesotho Lowlands Water Development Project Phase 2 (LLWDP) aims to improve water availability and access to improved water supply services and improve the Water and Sewerage Company’s performance through institutional strengthening. It focuses on water supply infrastructure to address water security challenges, strengthen sector institutions, and develop a National Sanitation Strategy. Water Supply Investments in Zones 2 and 3 will finance a program of activities designed to improve access to reliable domestic and industrial water supply services within Zones 2 and 3, specifically the towns of Maputsoe and Hlotse, and settlements and villages along the transmission pipeline route, reaching over 100,000 people.
The targeted area includes Lesotho’s second-largest industrial hub after Maseru (capital city) with significant business investment including a major milling company and 23 textile and apparel factories. Improved infrastructure will not only benefit households but be a lifeline to industries that have previously faced production disruptions due to water shortages. Once completed, the project is expected to safeguard water supply for years to come enhancing both economic resilience and public health. To achieve this the project has laid 412.5 km of water pipelines and 25.5 km bulk transmission pipelines. The project has also constructed a treatment plant with 27.5 ML capacity and rehabilitated 385 km of the distribution network.
