Ethiopia’s Rural Safety Net in Action

The Productive Safety Net Program (PSNP) is a government-led initiative implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and regional governments. It aims to reduce vulnerability, strengthen climate resilience, and enable households to transition out of poverty through cash and food transfers, skills training, and livelihood support. One of the largest social protection programs in Africa, PSNP combines immediate assistance with long-term investment in people, natural resources, and rural economies.

This video highlights how the program provides predictable support, rehabilitates degraded land through public works, and helps families build sustainable livelihoods.

Support to the program comes from World Bank financing through the Strengthen Ethiopia’s Adaptive Safety Net Project, together with contributions from 10 development partners. Itis supporting Ethiopia’s rural safety net to better protect extremely poor households from climate shocks and seasonal food gaps.
