00:05 It's a pleasure to be here in Vienna hosting this conference
00:09 for Europe and Central Asia on teachers and teacher policies.
00:12 In this conference,
00:13 we brought policymakers from 14 countries across Europe and Central Asia region,
00:18 as well as our partners from Austrian and Finnish
00:22 governments to discuss how to improve teacher policies and practices
00:26 at country levels.
00:28 The most important is the quality of teachers,
00:31 and this is the.
00:31 importance that goes far beyond technical quality of teaching
00:36 because teachers
00:37 are also role models.
00:39 Therefore they influence their students for their whole life.
00:43 Teachers are a critical part of every educational system.
00:46 The key is that teachers need to be well
00:49 prepared and motivated to do their job effectively.
00:52 That means strong systems to prepare them for teaching
00:55 and strong systems to support them professionally.
00:58 The world needs 44 million new teachers
01:01 to ensure universal primary and secondary education.
01:04 The reason for this is on the one hand,
01:07 growth of the demand,
01:08 but also teacher attrition,
01:10 the fact that teachers are leaving the profession
01:12 at massive rates.
01:16 The World Bank implements a Te tool,
01:19 a classroom observation tool that is used as a diagnostic
01:22 in Romania but also as a professional development program.
01:25 When you learn how to improve as a teacher,
01:28 your practices through self-awareness that leads to self-efficacy.
01:33 With TeachRaw,
01:35 we have an instrument for classroom observation.
01:37 And we got a lot of very,
01:39 very good and useful information out of that
01:43 in order to improve the life of teachers,
01:45 students,
01:46 and to improve the learning in Sarevo Canton,
01:49 we are implementing a curricular reform that has been on paper since 2016.
01:55 What we realized is that teachers Cannot be left alone
01:59 throughout this process.
02:01 They need strategies
02:03 and support
02:04 to navigate through these changes.
02:06 We are implementing new state standards in our public schools,
02:10 and we have big attention
02:12 to STEM teachers' capacity building.
02:14 Happy teachers,
02:15 happy students,
02:16 successful teachers,
02:17 successful students.
