01:04 We are currently on top of the dike.

01:06 Uh,

01:07 this project has,

01:07 uh,

01:08 two dikes.

01:09 There's one called the Northern Dyke

01:11 and the Southern Dyke.

01:12 They are each,

01:13 uh,

01:13 17 kilometers long.

01:14 So we're currently on top of the Northern yke

01:17 at kilometer

01:18 12 + 400.

01:21 What is going on here is,

01:22 um,

01:23 we're improving the infrastructure of the dike

01:25 so that we can protect

01:26 the livelihood and the

01:28 community who lives around here.

01:29 Uh,

01:29 tukonawatulo and zoyawanajari but least tokuzweka a

01:45 sasa is takwazike kaenni zulukwazi zinakapawali.

01:52 During the design,

01:53 it was very clear that,

01:54 uh,

01:54 even if we do the irrigation project

01:57 in Zoya,

01:58 and we don't do the dikes,

02:00 then the project is

02:02 It's not sustainable per se,

02:04 because every time it floods,

02:07 farmers will have to move away,

02:09 mostly especially in Bussia.

02:10 According to the design,

02:11 once we are done

02:12 with what

02:14 we have assigned the contractor to do in the dikes protection,

02:18 then the irrigation project is done.

02:19 The whole project will be very sustainable.

The Kenya Water Security and Climate Resilience Program is helping improve flood mitigation structures in Busia and Siaya counties which have experience perennial floods for decades. Up to 70,000 people have to flee their homes annually, lose income, and risk their health. Improving the structures of the dykes is helping prevent flooding, improving irrigation of farms, protecting livelihoods and communities.
