Isaac Sam is a cocoa farmer from the remote Onga-Wafa district in the Markham Valley of Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea (PNG) whose story as a small-scale cocoa farmer involves a long and risky journey carrying dry cocoa bags from his village to the nearest depot to sell. Isaac is one of over 500 cocoa farmers under the Agi Agro Cooperative in the Markham valley supported by the Productive Partnership in Agriculture Project (PPAP). Since it began in 2011, the US$110 (PGK303) million project has substantially increased the income and yields of thousands of cocoa and coffee-growing families. The project concluded in May 2021, yet the benefits for small-scale farmers and their families continue in communities across the country like the Markham Valley. The World Bank-funded project was funded through the International Development Association (IDA), the World Bank’s fund for the world’s most in-need countries. PPAP was also funded through the International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD), and the European Union’s Trust Fund, together with provincial and national governments across PNG, as well as a number of local farming organizations and communities.
