00:12 Ask,

00:13 this is Hart Schaffer,

00:14 the World Bank's vice president for the South Asia region.

00:17 I'm here in Ashurganj,

00:19 a town

00:20 in the Chittagong division of Bangladesh

00:23 and the site of one of the 8 locations

00:26 where the government of Bangladesh

00:28 is building modern steel silos.

00:31 You can see

00:33 behind me the massive steel silo complex.

00:36 These are silos that can store rice and wheat

00:39 up to 3 years.

00:40 Compared to that,

00:42 a traditional concrete warehouse can only store cranes

00:45 for up to 6 months,

00:46 so it's a huge difference.

00:48 Bangladesh is facing

00:50 high climate vulnerability

00:52 and is hit frequently

00:53 by natural disasters.

00:56 These modern food storage systems will help ensure that food is available

01:01 immediately

01:02 after a natural disaster hits.

01:04 The project has also distributed 500,000 household silos.

01:10 Those are containers that have been given to the poor households

01:13 in flood prone areas so they can store their food safely.

01:17 It will help modernize Bangladesh's food storage monitoring system,

01:21 and

01:22 food management capacity will be improved.

01:26 This is one of the examples where Bangladesh once again is strengthening

01:31 its resilience to climate change and natural disasters.

Hartwig Schafer, Vice President for South Asia Region, visited Ashuganj in Bangladesh where he oversaw the construction of modern steel silos. The World Bank is helping Bangladesh ensure food security by increasing storage capacity of national grain reserves by 535,000 tons for 4.5 million households.
