00:03 It's great to be back in Romania again.
00:06 I was here the last time in 2015.
00:09 We're just finishing up three days of very fruitful meetings here
00:13 in Romania where we've met with a broad group of stakeholders.
00:17 We met with the president,
00:18 the prime minister,
00:19 and members of cabinet.
00:22 But we also met with the private sector,
00:24 NGOs and development partners.
00:28 This visit comes at a time when the world,
00:30 and Romania included,
00:32 is going through a very challenging time because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
00:41 Thanks to reforms undertaken in the past as
00:43 well as a resilient and flexible private sector,
00:47 Romania is one of the few countries
00:49 that will come out of the pandemic
00:51 with growth returning to pre-pandemic levels already in 2021.
00:57 Now challenges of course remain continuing to focus on the health response as the
01:02 pandemic
01:03 brings unpredictability
01:05 but also continuing to focus on reforms that will help
01:08 manage through this period going forward.
01:12 And here we discussed a number of reforms continuing to
01:16 reduce the role of the state through state-owned enterprise reforms,
01:19 continuing to implement tax policy and administration reforms,
01:23 continuing to focus on pension reform.
01:25 Here the World Bank urged that this is an opportunity to
01:28 also look at equalizing the rights of men and women.
01:31 Also
01:32 looking at improving the effectiveness of the public sector
01:36 and of course
01:37 uh something very close to the World Bank's
01:39 heart which is continued focus on making effective,
01:42 well targeted social assistance as reforms get undertaken it's important
01:46 to make sure we protect those who are most vulnerable.
01:51 All of this with an underpinning of two very
01:53 important cross-cutting opportunities which is to go greener and cleaner
01:57 and at the same time also take advantage of digital technologies.
02:02 I heard a lot of support for our
02:04 continued engagement in the health and education sectors,
02:07 but also coupling that with building resilience through
02:10 focusing on disaster risk mitigation and management.
02:14 2021 marks 30 years of partnership between the World Bank and Romania.
02:18 This is an exciting moment for us to take stock in our rich partnership,
02:22 and the World Bank looks forward to continuing
02:24 to play an important role in Romania's development process
02:27 so that everyone in Romania can prosper and have a bright future.
