With the Global Roadmap of Action toward Sustainable Mobility (GRA), the international transport community made a significant investment in building consensus around: (a) quantitative targets for deep decarbonization of the sector; and (b) a structured list of actions to achieve these targets (including infrastructure and technology, regulatory and institutional, economics and finance, and public information). The GRA identified a list of actions pertaining to “economics and finance” to achieve green mobility (e.g., public funds allocation, pricing). Since its launch in 2019, the global environment has radically changed, and it is unclear the direction in which the world is heading on decarbonization targets and actions associated with finance and investments. The session aims to establish an understanding of the most stringent policy and investment barriers to achieve the “green mobility” goal/ Paris Climate Agreements target. Participants will discuss the risks and opportunities created by the global COVID context for decarbonization. The session will also launch a one-year work stream leading to COP26 to identify structured actions (policies, investments, innovative finance and good practice examples) across the transport sector. Co-created by leading thinkers and doers, during 1--3 December 2020 it featured a line up of around 150 world-class decision-makers and experts from national and local government, civil society, private sector, academia, philanthropy and multilateral entities. Scheduled to mark 12 months before the postponed United Nations Climate Conference under UK Presidency, En Route to COP26 was designed to accelerate collective and timely action by engaging transport actors to quickly, efficiently, and fairly realise the low carbon transport transition. The event featured opening and closing sessions, as well as 9 thematic sessions covering topics central to the acceleration of transport decarbonisation such as: national climate and transport strategies, placing transport decarbonisation at the heart of green and equitable economic recovery; re-thinking urban mobility and harnessing opportunities to fast track its delivery; ending internal combustion engines for passenger and freight transport; enabling sustainable maritime transport for Small Island Developing States and maximising the links between transport and health.
