LOME, March 31, 2023 – Today, World Bank Group President David Malpass met with President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé of Togo.
President Malpass and President Gnassingbé discussed Togo’s medium-term development strategy and the challenging global environment. President Malpass encouraged Togo to pursue reforms aimed at maintaining macroeconomic stability, especially through improved effectiveness of spending and taxation. In addition, President Malpass emphasized the importance of trade and availability of working capital for private sector growth.
President Malpass and President Gnassingbé also spoke about Togo’s potential as a regional logistics hub and opportunities to improve agriculture productivity and effective and efficient use of fertilizers.
President Malpass underscored the Bank’s commitment to strengthen its partnership with Togo to address drivers of fragility and build resilience against security risks.
President Malpass congratulated Togo on the Memorandum of Understanding between the University of Lomé and Clark Atlanta University, which will be signed on April 1st, 2023, at the University of Lomé. The objective of the initiative is for the universities to collaborate on research, in addition to educational and training activities of mutual interest at both the institutional and departmental levels.
