Readout from World Bank Group President David Malpass’s Meeting with President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania

SHARM-EL-SHEIKH, November 9, 2022— Yesterday, World Bank Group President David Malpass met with President SamiaSuluhu Hassan of Tanzania.

President Malpass and President Hassan discussed the challenging outlook for Tanzania and developing countries around the world as they face slow growth, high inflation, rising interest rates, and the impacts of climate change. President Malpass affirmed the World Bank Group’s (WBG) commitment to support impactful adaptation and resilience projects in Tanzania. President Malpass thanked President Hassan for her participation in the presentation of SCALE, the new World Bank fund that will help bridge the climate finance gap by pooling funding from the global community and providing grant payments on a results basis to client countries against verified greenhouse gas emissions reductions.

President Malpass and President Hassan held positive talks on her government’s reforms to enable the private sector, including the importance of implementing the recently approved Investment Act. President Malpass was also glad to discuss Tanzania’s liberalization of its agriculture and fertilizer systems. President Malpass and President Hassan also spoke about clean cooking initiatives and the importance of community engagement and information campaigns to support social acceptance.

President Malpass and President Hassan discussed regional initiatives with respect to the energy and transport sectors. President Malpass highlighted the benefits of regional power sector integration through renewable energy sources, which will lower carbon intensity and increased energy access in the region.
