RABAT, March 23, 2022 – Today, World Bank Group President David Malpass met with Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch of Morocco.
President Malpass congratulated Head of Government Akhannouch on Morocco’s strong response to the COVID-19 pandemic. President Malpass reaffirmed the World Bank Group’s (WBG) continued support to the Moroccan people both during the current interlinked crises and beyond.
President Malpass and Head of Government Akhannouch discussed the impact of the Ukraine crisis on Morocco, especially on food and energy prices. As Morocco works to address this complex situation, compounded by the ongoing drought, President Malpass emphasized the importance of market-based pricing with targeted social support. President Malpass also expressed WBG readiness to support the Moroccan government to address with urgency the impact of the global uncertainty on the most vulnerable.
President Malpass and Head of Government Akhannouch discussed the Moroccan government’s New Development Model for job creation and labor force participation. President Malpass emphasized the importance of complimentary pro-competition and SOE reforms and deep institutional reforms in the energy and water sectors to elevate Morocco to the next level of growth driven by the private sector.
President Malpass also expressed his appreciation to Head of Government Akhannouch for Morocco’s planned hosting of the 2023 WBG-IMF Annual Meetings.
