Juan Martínez Álvarez appointed as World Bank Program Manager for Colombia

Bogotá, May 18, 2026 — Juan Martínez Álvarez has been appointed as World Bank Program Manager for Colombia, based in Bogotá. Martínez is a financial economist with more than 20 years of experience in development finance. In this role, he will lead the ongoing dialogue with the Government of Colombia and help optimize the impact of the World Bank’s financial and technical assistance programs in the country.

Prior to his appointment in Colombia, Martínez served as Lead Financial Markets Specialist at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) in Colombia and previously in Washington, D.C. He has also worked for the World Bank Group, the OECD, and BBVA.

Martínez holds a PhD in Finance, a Master’s and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Oviedo, a Master’s degree in Finance and Banking from the University of Alcalá, and an MBA from Johns Hopkins University.

Martínez succeeds Peter Siegenthaler, who held the position from 2021 to 2026.
