World Bank congratulates Peru's President-Elect on victory

LIMA, June 8, 2011 - The World Bank Vice President for Latin America and the Caribbean, Pamela Cox, sent a letter of congratulations yesterday to Ollanta Humala, on his victory in the Presidential election held on June 5, 2011.

“As we discussed during your visit to Washington last September, we agree on the importance and the priorities you have identified for your government: the need to reduce poverty, maintain economic stability and generate more inclusive growth. The World Bank is committed to these same objectives, as embodied in the Policy Notes for Peru that the Bank has recently developed and disseminated,” Cox expressed in the letter.

The Vice President for Latin America and the Caribbean also reiterated the World Bank’s interest in continuing to strengthen its relations with the Peruvian Government and to work closely and productively towards the goals of economic development with opportunities for all in Peru.

The World Bank has an investment portfolio in Peru that consists of 19 operations totaling US$ 2,559.3 million designed to improve or expand the coverage of electrification, irrigation, rural water and sanitation, development of environmental policy and disaster prevention and management, improved maternal and child health, nutrition and quality of education among others.
