BURUNDI WATER SUPPLY AND SANITATION ACCESS PROJECT
EARLY MARKET ENGAGEMENT NOTICE
WATER INTAKE ON THE LAKE TANGANYIKA, WATER TREATMENT PLANT AND DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM IN BUJUMBURA, BURUNDI
The Government of the Republic of Burundi (GoB) through financing of the International Development Association (IDA) (US$ 80 million) is implementing the WATER SUPPLY AND SANITATION ACCESS PROJECT in Burundi (PAEPA), whose objective is to increase access to climate-resilient water supply and sanitation services and to strengthen the capacity of water operators.
The Project is implemented by the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Energy, Industry, Trade and Tourism and REGIDESO - the National Water Utility and will finance the following four components:
1. Strengthening National WASH Platform, Governance and Reforms.
2. Service Providers Performance Improvement.
3. Increasing Climate-Resilient Water Supply and Sanitation Access.
4. Project Coordination and Management
Ministry of Mineral Resources, Energy, Industry, Trade and Tourism and REGIDESO, through the Project Implementation Units under the ministry and under REGIDESO, hereby informs interested stakeholders of upcoming procurement opportunities for the design and construction of water supply and distribution infrastructure in Bujumbura, the economic capital of Burundi.
This Early Market Engagement aims to provide advanced visibility of the planned works and allow potential participants to prepare for the forthcoming procurement processes.
Project Overview
The Government is undertaking large investments in water infrastructure to improve access to safely managed drinking water, enhance system capacity, increase the production capacity in the existing network and expand distribution networks to the population of Bujumbura. The planned procurements will be structured in two lots, covering the production plant design and construction (including the water intake in Lake Tanganyika, pumping units and the treatment stage) and the water network construction (including conveyance, storage, pumping and distribution systems).
Procurement Procedures
All construction works and related services financed under PAEPA will be procured in strict accordance with the World Bank Procurement Regulations for Investment Project Financing (IPF) Borrowers and in full compliance with the World Bank Environmental and Social Framework (ESF).
Public Session
As part of this process, a public information session will be held on January 21st, 2026 from 1pm to 4pm, Burundi time. The session will provide further details on the projects and the engagement process and offer an opportunity for interested parties to raise questions and provide feedback.
