Download the full report: Legal Foundations for Just Transitions: Strengthening National Frameworks for Development

Countries worldwide are committing to major societal, industrial, and economic transformations to address the triple crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. A just transition aims to ensure that these shifts occur equitably: protecting the environment, workers, and communities while leaving no one behind. However, the national and international legal and policy landscape regarding just transition remains fragmented and underdeveloped, creating challenges for implementation and enforcement.

This roundtable session will bring together experts, practitioners and policy makers to unpack the findings of the new report prepared by the GFLJD Environmental Justice Working Group to present the main elements of a national legal framework for just transition across sectors. The report provides recommendations to embed just transition principles into national legal frameworks and highlights their relevance to the operations of development institutions and governments.
